EMT is rigid metal tube or pipe that is typically measured by inside diameter (3/4", 1", 1.25", 1.5", 2", etc.).
How many wires will fit in a conduit?
CAT 5e and CAT 6 cables are sometimes run inside metal conduit to go under floors to desks, conference tables and other areas.
The chart below is a guideline of approximately how many cables will fit in standard size pipes -- for planning and general information.
Longer pipes can hold fewer cables due to friction and 'twist' of the cables, and pipes with bends and joints also hold less cable.
"Greenfield", "BX" or flexible metal conduit is also available in similar sizes, but holds less cable than rigid pipe.
Sizes under 3/4" are not recommended for any Ethernet cable. Generally, 1-inch is the smallest recommended size.
HDMI cables require at least a 1.25" rigid or 1.5" flexible conduit -- but 2" is strongly recommended.
For each additional bend or joint in pipe, reduce the fill by 30%. For each additional bend or joint in pipe, reduce the fill by 30%.
3/4" EMT ==> 1 cable.
1" EMT ==> 4 cables.
1.25" EMT ==> 6 cables.
1.50" EMT ==> 9 cables.
2" EMT ==> 16 cables.
2.5" EMT ==> 25 cables.
3" EMT ==> 36 cables.
4" EMT ==> 75 cables.
For 'Greenfield' or flexible conduit, use the next smaller size for fill estimates (ie. a 2" flexible conduit will hold the same cables as a 1.5" rigid).
3/4" EMT ==> 3 cables.
1" EMT ==> 6 cables.
1.25" EMT ==> 10 cables.
1.50" EMT ==> 15 cables.
2" EMT ==> 28 cables.
2.5" EMT ==> 45 cables.
3" EMT ==> 64 cables.
4" EMT ==> 132 cables.
For 'Greenfield' or flexible conduit, use the next smaller size for fill estimates (ie. a 2" flexible conduit will hold the same cables as a 1.5" rigid).
